What is Saju?
Saju (사주, "four pillars") is Korea's traditional way of reading destiny, known in Chinese as BaZi. The year, month, day and hour of your birth each form a pillar of two characters — eight characters in all (palja). Every character belongs to one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. How evenly those elements are spread describes your personality and the natural flow of your life.
The top character of your birth day, your Day Master, represents you. Each of the ten Day Masters, from Yang Wood (a great tree) to Yin Water (gentle rain), has its own nature.
The ten Day Masters
- Yang Wood (甲木) The Tall Tree — a natural leader
- Yin Wood (乙木) The Flower and Vine — gentle but resilient
- Yang Fire (丙火) The Sun — bright and warm
- Yin Fire (丁火) The Candle — a quiet, steady glow
- Yang Earth (戊土) The Mountain — unshakable
- Yin Earth (己土) The Field — nurturing everything
- Yang Metal (庚金) The Iron — strong and loyal
- Yin Metal (辛金) The Jewel — refined and brilliant
- Yang Water (壬水) The Ocean — broad and deep
- Yin Water (癸水) The Gentle Rain — quietly nourishing
Calculated with care
Months in Saju change at the solar terms, which Onul places to the minute with astronomical calculations. Your birth time is read in your own time zone and converted to standard time if you were born during daylight saving time. If you do not know your birth time, we read the year, month and day pillars.
